ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE ROSES REVOLUTION FOUNDER. PLEASE SHARE WIDELY
Dear all,
Six years ago and out of my outrage against the Spanish Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists I started a movement of women who will take roses to hospitals and public buildings to tell their stories of obstetric violence.
The movement has grown far beyond anything I could have ever imagined (we know of 31 countries that actively participate).
The movement has grown far beyond anything I could have ever imagined (we know of 31 countries that actively participate).
A couple of years ago while in a conference in Berlin it shocked me to hear so many women from around the world talking with passion about The Roses Revolution and explaining to me (without knowing that I have founded it) why it was so important. It was then when I saw clearly that it was a success for it now belonged completely to the women, the women have found their voice with it, and it was used by many countries to report and fight obstetric violence. And as a midwife explained in a conference using the rose was a healing concept, which it was indeed my intention at first, to return the dignity and power to women who had being humiliated, insulted and hurt during their birth experiences and express it and verbalise it.
Yesterday was the 6th year of The Roses Revolution and we, Susana Ferreiro and I have decided to completely let go of the role of coordinators of the movement, to leave it as a concept and a symbol for the international fight against obstetric violence for women to use everywhere and however they need to.
We are extremely proud that thanks to The Roses Revolution and the incredible work of the volunteers now the 25N is understood as the international day not only against gender violence but also against obstetric violence.
We will now start working to compile some resources on the web for anyone who wants to join and also to edit an entry on Wikipedia in English and Spanish.
We will continue to look after the concept, and join the movement independently each year, as well as being available for any press matters, but we will not maintain a supervisory role or an organisation type of approach anymore. It will be what it always was “A movement of women everywhere against obstetric violence.”
